General Information

The museum is located at the camp of the Infantry School at Halkis, 70 km north from the city of Athens, with easy access by road or railway.

History

The Infantry School was established in Athens in 1926, by the French Military Mission, and operated until 1935 under the name "Infantry Application School", located at the old Cadets Military School camp ("Pedion Areos") in Athens.

In the year 1935 it was transferred in Thessaloniki, where it operated until 1940 at the camp of the Higher War College. Its functioning was interrupted in 1940, because of the II World War and the German occupation, and started again after the liberation, as Battalion of the "General Officers Training Center", again in the old camp of the Cadets School in Athens. Finally, in 1947 it moved to Halkis, where it is located until today, at "Velissarios Camp", named after Maj. I. Velissarios a hero of the Balkan wars.
