Lieutenant General Anastasios A. Spanos was born in 1964 in Prasino, Aliveri, Evia. He was admitted to the Hellenic Military Academy (Evelpidon) in 1982 and graduated in 1986 as Infantry Second Lieutenant.
As a junior Officer, he served in Infantry Units and the Hellenic Military Academy (Evelpidon) as Platoon Leader and Company Commander.
He has attended all required Infantry Officer Training Courses.
In 2001, he attended the Supreme War College.
In 2002, he attended the Joint National Defence Staff Officer College.
During his career as a senior Officer, he served in the 22nd National Guard Battalions Command, while in 2003 he was assigned as Deputy Commander to the 296th National Guard Battalion.
In 1996, he was assigned as Commander of the 37th AT Company in Neohori, Orestiada.
In 2005, he was assigned as Commander of the Reserve Officer Candidate Battalion of the Infantry Reserve Officer School and in 2006 as Commander of the 296th Mechanised National Guard Battalion.
He has served as Staff Officer in Formations and Groups, as well as in the II Mechanised Infantry Division, in the Cypriot National Guard General Staff, and the Hellenic Army General Staff.
In 2011, he attended the Hellenic National Defence College and in 2013 he was assigned as Chief of Staff of the 98th Higher National Guard Battalions Command “ARCHIPELAGO”.
In 2015, he was assigned as Deputy Director of the Infantry Directorate of the Hellenic Army General Staff.
In 2016, he was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned first as Commanding General of the 30th Mechanised Brigade “TOMORITSA” in Lagos, Didymotiho, and then as Chief of Staff of C Army Corps “MEGAS ALEXANDROS”.
In 2019, upon his promotion to Major General, he was assigned as Deputy Commander of C Army Corps “MEGAS ALEXANDROS” and, in 2020, as Commanding General of the 98th Higher National Guard Battalions Command “ARCHIPELAGO”.
In March 2021, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and assigned as Commanding General of C Army Corps/NRDC-GR which, during exercise STEADFAST LEDA-21, assumed for the first time the role of Multi-Corps Land Component Command (MC-LCC).
On 9 March 2022, upon decision of the Governmental Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence, he was assigned as Commandant of the Hellenic National Defence College.
Lieutenant General Anastasios A. Spanos has been awarded all decorations, commendations, and medals provided for his rank.
He is married with two children, Apostolos-Panagiotis, lawyer, and Evdoxia-Maria, journalist.
