Lieutenant General Prokopios Mavraganis

Lieutenant General Prokopios Mavraganis was born in 1965 in Athens. He entered the Hellenic Army Military Academy (Evelpidon) in 1983. He was commissioned in 1987 as an Infantry Second Lieutenant and was selected to join the Hellenic Special Forces.

He attended the Basic and Advanced Courses of the Infantry School, as well as all the mandatory Special Operations Forces Courses, the Army War College and the Hellenic National Defence College. He is a graduate from the Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Course, from various SOF expertise Courses of the International Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol School (ILRRPS) in Germany, from CIMIC and SOF Planning Courses in Germany and from the Strategic Information Course.

During his career as a junior officer, he served as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander in SF and SOF as well as Commander of the Basic Parachute Training Company.

As a field grade officer, he was appointed as the Commander of the Special Parachutists Detachment, Commander of an Amphibious Commando Battalion, Commander of a Parachute Battalion and Commander of the Airborne School. He also served as Director of the Hellenic Army General Staff Operations Centre, Director of Staff Office to the Chief of Hellenic Armed Forces Commander (COM/HAGS), Assistant Director HAGS/Operation Directorate and   Commander of the Hellenic Army Forces in Cyprus.

As a flag officer, since March 2018, he served as Commander of the 13th Special Operations Command, as the first Commander of the Joint Special Operations Command, as Deputy Commander of the Hellenic Special Warfare Command and as Chief of A’ Branch/ΗΝDGS (Plans and Operations).

On 13 January 2024, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and in accordance with the Hellenic Government National Security Council decision, on 15 January 2024 was appointed as Commanding General of the Special Warfare Command.

He is a certified Military Free-Fall (MFF) Parachutist, High Altitude MFF Jump Master and is a graduate of the Hellenic Navy Underwater Demolition School.    He has been awarded all decorations, medals, and commendations befitting his rank, commanding and staff assignments.

He holds a Master’s Degree in “Business Administration and Human Resources” (MBA).

He speaks English. He is married and has one child.
