On 23 September 1821, six months after the start of the Revolution of 1821, one of the most important historic events of the Greek Revolution took place. The protagonist was the Commander in Chief Theodoros Kolokotronis, who, understanding the strategic importance of Tripolitsa, convinced the chieftains to besiege the city.
Four major corps of besiegers formed a semi-circle around Tripolitsa. Kolokotronis commanded the left, Giatrakos the right, Anagnostaras the centre and Petrobeis Mavromihalis was behind the centre. After numerous efforts of offensive actions, the breach of one of the city gates was achieved and the rebels entered the city. The fierce and extreme attacks that followed caught the besieged completely by surprise.
The victory of the Greeks against the Ottomans with the Fall of Tripolitsa was decisive for the psychology of the Greeks and reinforced the belief that the liberation from the Ottoman yoke was feasible. This impressive victory gave the rebels a new push and marked the beginning of the systematic liberation of the Greek territories under Ottoman occupation.
