While the Hellenic Army was operating in the region of Western Macedonia during the First Balkan War, it liberated Kastoria on 11 November 1912. The Ottoman forces were constantly retreating and had already mustered in the region of Korytsa, leaving a great part of Western Macedonia uncovered.
On 10 November 1912, the 1st Cavalry Regiment proceeded upon orders of the General Headquarters towards the villages Andartiko and Vatohori, having first sent more than 300 Ottoman captives to Florina. In the meantime, a Cavalry Company was sent towards Kastoria, which according to information had been abandoned by the Ottoman forces. The main mission of the Company was to enter the town of Kastoria and request its surrender by the Ottomans.
The Company of the 1st Cavalry Regiment, having reached Aposkepos village, sent a section with an Officer in charge to enter Kastoria and request the town’s surrender. Upon entering, the section only met some wandering Ottoman soldiers and immediately returned to base, as its insufficient forces led to the inability of safely capturing the town, The liberation of Kastoria became reality when the Hellenic Army entered the town, without meeting resistance, on the morning of 11 November 1912.
