On Sunday, October 4, 2026, celebrations marking the 107th anniversary of the liberation of Xanthi took place, attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis and the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis.
The events included, among other things, the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at the Metropolitan Church of Saint John the Forerunner, officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Bishop Panteleimon of Xanthi and His Eminence Metropolitan Bishop Pavlos of Servia and Kozani, a memorial service at the city’s War Memorial, where wreaths were laid and a subsequent military and student parade in the city of Xanthi.
The commemorative events were attended by Xanthi MPs Mr Spyros Tsilingiris, Mr Bourhan Baran and Mr Hussein Zeibek, the Head of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region, Mr Christodoulos Topsidis, the Mayor of Xanthi, Mr Efstratios Kontos, the Commanding General of the Supreme Military Command of Thrace, Lieutenant General Panagiotis Kavidopoulos, representatives of the local government, active-duty and retired officers of the Armed and Security Forces and other guests.
