On Sunday 28 May 2023, the official celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Crete took place in Chania, which included an official doxology at the Holy Metropolitan Church of the “Presentation of Virgin Mary” in the morning and the closing event at the Battle of Crete Monument (Chania-Maleme Airport) in the afternoon.
The events were honoured by the presence of the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff Lieutenant General Themistoklis Bourolias as representative of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General Konstantinos Floros, the Metropolitan Bishop of Kydonia and Apokoronos Mr Damaskinos, the Commander of the Higher Military Command of Interior and Islands “Aegeas” Lieutenant General Sotirios Kostakoglou, the General Inspector of the Hellenic Police of Southern Greece Lieutenant General Nikolaos Spanoudakis and the Regional Vice Governor of Chania Mr Nikolaos Kalogeris.
Other attendants at the event were the Ambassador of Great Britain Mr Matthew Lodge, the Deputy Ambassador of Australia Mr Andrea Biggi, the Second Secretary of the Embassy of New Zealand in Rome Ms Emma Murphy, Defence Attachés, representatives of the local self-government, as well as Officers of the Armed and Security Forces.
