Lieutenant General Athanasios Sardellis
Lieutenant General Athanasios Sardellis was born in Athens in 1966. He was admitted to the Hellenic Army Academy (Evelpidon) in 1984 and graduated in 1988 as Artillery Second Lieutenant.
During his career he served in various Field and Air Defence Artillery Units, assuming command positions of all levels, including those of “HAWK” Homing Missiles Battery Commander, “OSA-AK” Homing Missile Battalion Deputy Commander, and “PzH2000GR” Howitzer Battalion Deputy Commander. In 2006 he was assigned as Commander of the 182nd TOR-M1 Artillery Battalion.
He has also served in the following positions:
2001: Planning – Logistics Operations Staff Officer and Chief of International Affairs Section of the Hellenic B’ Army Corps
2002: Planning and Operations Staff Officer in the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps (NRDC – IT) – Milan, Italy
2011: Director of the Deputy Chief of HAGS Staff Office.
2014: Director of Air Defence Artillery and, following, Deputy Director of the Artillery Directorate of the Hellenic Army General Staff
2016: Deputy Commander of the 80th Higher National Guard Battalions Command “KOS”
2017: Chief of National Defence Planning Section of the Defence Planning and Programming Directorate (D2) of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
2018: Promoted to Brigadier General and appointed Director of the Staff Office of the Chief of Staff of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
2020: Commanding General of the 96th Higher National Guard Battalions Command “CHIOS”
2021: Promoted to Major General and appointed Commanding General of NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI)
2022: Appointed Artillery Director of the Hellenic Army General Staff
2024: Upon decision of the Governmental National Security Council, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and assumed the duties of Commandant of the Hellenic National Defence College
Lieutenant General has graduated from all required schools of the Artillery. In 2000 he graduated from the Hellenic Supreme War College and in 2013 from the Hellenic National Defence College. He has also graduated from the Basic Department of the Chemical Warfare School of the US Army and attended “GBAD Evaluation and Operations” and “Force Generation Planning” Courses of NATO School (Oberammergau, Germany).
He holds a postgraduate degree on “Applied Strategy and National Security” from the University of Plymouth (England).
He has been awarded all decorations, commendations and medals, as such are provided for by his rank. In 2015 he was appointed member of the Honourable Order of Saint Barbara by the United States Field Artillery Association. In 2020, he was presented with the Cross of St. Isidoros by the Metropolitan of Chios, Psara, and Inousses, Mr. Markos.
He speaks English and Italian. He is married to Elena, and has two children aged 30 and 27 years old.
