On Sunday, October 21st 2018, the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Alkiviadis Stefanis, attended the annual memorial event for the Cavalry Division fallen fighters during 1940-41 that was held in the Cavalry Memorial in Metsovo and included a memorial service, speeches and wreath laying.
During the event, the Chief at his address, stated amongst other things the following:
– We pay respect this year also to the fallen, injured and all participating Officers and Soldiers of the Cavalry Division, who have acted victoriously for the Greek Arms during the Battle of Pindus in 1940.
– Their sacrifice is being recognized by all of us, as a symbol of a high value, reminding us the battles of the Greek Nation through the centuries and the perpetual faith of the Greek people to defend freedom and democracy;
– Today’s event helps us recall shocking and unforgettable memories and draw standards and examples, aiming at awakening the endless powers of the Hellenism for progress, prosperity and development.
The event, which was held under the auspices of the HAGS Cavalry – Armour Directorate, was attended by Armour Officers on active duty and retired, the Honorary Chief HNDGS, General (ret.) Dimitrios Grapsas, a delegation of Second Lieutenants and Regular Sergeants of Class 2018, as well as a great crowd of people.
Epirus District was represented by the Regional Vice-Governor for Welfare, Social Cohesion and Solidarity Affairs, Ms.
Panagiota Mitrokosta, and the Local Administration was represented by the Mayor of Metsovo, Mr. Dimitrios Tzafeas.
