Naming ceremony of the Outpost “GEMISTI – FIVE YEAR SERVICE VOLUNTEER SERGEANT (ENG) STEFANOS PITIKAKIS – PRIVATE (ENG) CHRISTOS PALIVIDAS”

On Wednesday, 11 July, 2018, the naming ceremony of the Greek Outpost “GEMISTI – FIVE YEAR SERVICE VOLUNTEER SERGEANT (ENG) STEFANOS PITIKAKIS – PRIVATE (ENG) CHRISTOS PALIVIDAS” was held.   
In early June 1998, the 212 Squad of the Land Minefield Clearance Battalion, started minefield clearance works, at the area of Eliki, Gemisti, Evros.  The Squad of the Land Minefield Clearance Battalion in the context of its mission, had conducted the removal of a significant number of antipersonnel mines, when in the morning of Monday, 15 June, 1998, the two minesweepers, Five Year Service Volunteer Sergeant (Eng) Stefanos Pitikakis and Private (Eng) Christos Palividas, were mortally wounded from the explosion of an antipersonnel mine.
The naming ceremony was attended by the Commander of D Army Corps “THRACE”, Lieutenant General Georgios Kampas, the local authorities and relatives of the two servicemen who died on active duty.
The Army respects and honours its history.
