Conclusion of the “2nd Land Forces Conference”

Friday, 28 September 2018, was the final day of the two-day “2nd Land Forces Conference”, which took place in the Hellenic Military Academy (Evelpidon), organised by the Hellenic Army General Staff and the Institute of International Relations of Pantion University.

The aim of the Conference was to highlight and examine the role of the Land Forces in the era of “Multi-Domain Battle”, which constitutes the transformation of modern operational concepts after 2020.

The Conference provided an opportunity for the exchange of productive views on the role of the land forces as the dominant component of joint forces in the multi-domain battlefield. At the same time, it referred to all modern international and national security matters, as well as to the implementation of multi-domain battle in Greek reality.

The conference was opened by the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Ms. Maria Kollia – Tsarouha, while addresses were also delivered by the Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff, Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, the Chief of Cypriot National Guard General Staff, Lieutenant General Ilias Leontaris, the Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Alkiviadis Stefanis, the Director of the Institute of International Relations, Mr. Haralambos Papasotiriou, the Commander of the Allied Land Command, Lieutenant General J. THOMSON, and the representative of US Army Europe, Major General J. GRONSKI.

Speakers at the conference included active duty and retired general Officers, diplomats, distinguished academics, and representatives of entities involved in defence and security matters, both from Greece and abroad.
The keynote address of the conference was “The Role of Land Forces in Joint and Combined Operations: Lessons from the Past and a Look to the Future”, given by Professor Dr. Massimo de LEONARDIS, President of the International Commission of Military History.

The conference included the following 4 sessions:

– 1st Session: “International and Regional Security Environment: The Challenges Posed and How to Address Them”.

– 2nd Session: “Multi-Domain Battle: Land Forces’ Capabilities and Manoeuvre for Conducting Combat Operations Beyond 2025”.

– 3rd Session: “Implementing Multi-Domain Battle in the Land Operational Environment of Greece and Cyprus”.

– 4th Session: “Land Forces Command and Leadership in the Multi-Domain Battlefield”.

HAGS’ intention, as expressed during the previous year’s 1st Conference, is to turn this activity into an international forum for the exchange of views among military, diplomatic, academic, and political scientists and researchers in the area of defence on matters concerning both the highlighting of the land component of the Armed Forces, as well as the optimum use and transformation thereof, within the framework of the Deterrent – Defence Planning.
