The Battle of Salamis was held on 28/29 September 480BC and is considered one of the most important naval battles of ancient times, setting the course of events during the fight between the Alliance of Greek city – states and the Persian Empire.
After the Battle at Thermopylae, the Athenians headed towards Salamina, where the council of Greek forces met to discuss the conduct of the naval battle. Despite tensions and disagreements regarding the place of conduct of the naval battle, the Athenian General Themistocles convinced the Greek side to confront the Persians in Salamis. Then, by various means, he forced the Persian leader Xerxes to launch an attack at the straits of Salamis, in order to practically annul the predominance of the Persian fleet. During the naval battle, the Greek fleet won a major victory, destroying hundreds of Persian ships.
This victory led to the end of the Persian aggression against Greece. The Battle of Salamis maintained the position of the Hellenes in the world, highlighting their strategic and combat capabilities. It contributed not only to the deterrence of the Persian domination, but also to the shaping of future political and cultural developments in Greek history.
