On Wednesday 16 October 2024, an anniversary event for the completion of 120 years since the commencement of the Macedonian Struggle took place in the Municipal Amphitheatre of Xanthi, which was attended by the Commanding General of D Army Corps “THRAKI”, Lieutenant General Stavros Papastathopoulos.
The Commanding General of D Army Corps “THRAKI”, Lieutenant General Stavros Papastathopoulos made an address in the beginning of the event, which was followed by speeches by the Honorary Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff, General (ret.) Haralambos Lalousis, the Professor of Modern and Contemporary Greek History of Democritus University of Thrace, Ms. Elpida Vogli, and the Professor of Cultural Studies and Dean of the School of Classics and Humanities of Democritus University of Thrace, Mr. Emmanouil Varvounis. The discussion and the exchange of opinions which followed the speeches was chaired by the Historian of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, Ms. Evangelia Palla.
The event was also attended by the granddaughter of Pavlos Melas, Ms. Natalia Ioannidi, representatives of Local Government and Church Authorities, active duty and retired officers of the Armed and Security Forces, and other guests.
