On Thursday 05 December 2024, in the framework of the year 2024 having being named be the Hellenic Army General Staff as “Precaution – Adaptation – Confrontation of Climate Change Consequences Year”, a seminar on the matter was held in the Armed Forces Officers Club. The seminar was attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis and the Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, as representative of the Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Houpis.
The purpose of the seminar was the educate and inform the participants on matters regarding the consequences, challenges, and solutions for climate change by presenting scientific data, developments, environmental and social consequences, as well as new and cutting-edge technologies.
In the beginning of the seminar, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis made an address. Following, the Research Director of the National Observatory of Athens, Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos, the President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation, Dr. Efthymios Lekkas, the President of the Hellenic Open University, Dr. Ioannis Kalavrouziotis, the Professor of the Democritus University of Thrace Mr. Georgios Tsandopoulos, the Associate Professor of the Democritus University of Thrace, Mr. Apostolos Kandartzis, the Professor of the Hellenic Open University Dr. Georgios Hatzigeorgiou, and the Instructor of the Fire Service Academy, Lt. Colonel (Fire Service) Nikolaos Iliopoulos made speeches.
The seminar was also attended by Rear Admiral (Economics) Georgios Skrekas HN, as representative of the Chief of Hellenic Navy General Staff Dimitrios – Eleftherios Kataras HN, the Commanding General of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, Brigadier General (HAF) Konstantinos Marousos, as representative of the Chief of Hellenic Air Force General Staff, Lieutenant General (HAF) Dimosthenis Grigoriadis, members of the Supreme Military Council, Officers and Non-Commisioned Officers, and other guests.
After the event, the Headmistress and the person responsible for the educational programme of the Alexandroupolis pre-school were presented with awards for claiming the 1st position of the on-line competition for best poster, in which 23 pre-schools of the Hellenic Army participated.
