Ottoman forces attempted to capture Mesolonghi (1822) without success. In 1825, Reşid Mehmed Pasha Kütahı attempted to capture the town with a large force, but failed. However, with the arrival of large forces from land and sea under Ibrahim, the siege resumed.
By February 1826, the Turks had no success, while Andreas Miaoulis with his fleet managed to successfully resupply Mesolonghi. However, in March, after the capture of lagoon islets like Vasiladi and Dolmas, the resupply of the town with food and munitions became difficult.
Control of the islet of Klisova by the Greeks was not enough to secure the resupply routes and the defenders found themselves without food and munitions. Thus, the council of chieftains and town notables made a decision for the inhabitants of Mesolonghi to exit the town on the night of 10 (Lazarus Saturday) to 11 (Palm Sunday) April 1826.
The exodus plan was probably leaked through treachery and thousands of Greeks were slaughtered or captured. The tragic events of the fall of Mesolonghi strengthened the Philhellenic movement in Europe and had a profound effect in the final solution of the Greek issue by the Great Powers.
