Personnel Recognition

On Friday, 25 January 2019, Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) Athanasios Katsantonis was recognised for scaling the 6th highest peak in the world, Cho Oyu (8,201 m), on the Nepal-Tibet (China) border in 2018 without the use of supplemental oxygen.
Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) Athanasios Katsantonis graduated from the Hellenic Military Academy (Evelpidon) in 1989. He served in the Special Forces in various assignments in Greece and abroad.
He attended all required Infantry and Special Forces courses with many distinctions.
As a climber, he has scaled, among others, Mont Blanc (4,810 m) on the French-Italian border and the Lenin Peak (7,130 m) on the Kyrgyz – Tajik border, in which case he was the only one to climb to the peak.
At the same time, he has run many mountain races, such as in Switzerland in 1991 (100 km race), winning first place for the Greek team.
