On Saturday, 27 October 2018, the Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Alkiviadis Stefanis, opened nine new exhibition halls at the Balkan Wars Museum in Gefyra, Thessaloniki.
The event took place in Villa Modiano and was attended by representatives of the local religious authorities and the community of Gefyra of the Municipality of Halkidona, local associations, as well as many people and volunteers, who tirelessly offered work to support the War Museum.
The 9 new exhibition halls were renovated by the Hellenic Army General Staff and, according to the Chief, “aim at contributing to the repayment of our historical debt to highlight our historical heritage”. The new exhibitions are on the following themes:
– Folklore
– Army Band musical instruments
– Cavalry tack
– Field Medical equipment
– Traditional smithery
– Traditional distillery – winery
– Traditional dovecot
– Permanent exhibition on the history of Philhellenism
– Hall for periodical exhibitions and permanent historical photo footage
The exhibits came from equipment of historical value found in Army Units and from contributions by friends of the Museum. Except for the events of the liberation of Thessaloniki, the Balkan War epic, and everyday military life, these exhibits also highlight the local folk tradition, thus contributing to the preservation of historical memory.
