On Monday 02 December 2024, the naming ceremony of Class of 2027 “Lieutenant General Nikolaos Kadoundas” Second Year Cadets took place in the Hellenic Army Academy, in the presence of the Inspector General – Commander of Military Training, Lieutenant General Spyridon Alfandakis, as representative of the Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis.
In the framework of a monograph competition on the hero who gave his name to the Class of 2027, the three top second year cadets were presented with awards.
The ceremony was attended by the hero’s wife, Stavroula Katounda, his daughter Sylvia Katounda, Officers and Cadets of the Academy.
Curriculum Vitae of Lieutenant General Nikolaos Katoundas:
He was born in Patras on 11 January 1943. He graduated from Hellenic Army Academy in 1967. He was a graduate of the University of Athens Law School. In September 1973 he was transferred to the 33rd Commando Squadron in Cyprus to command the 31st Strike Company in Kerynia. On 5 August 1974, he was presented with the Medal for Gallant Actions, because during the night 20/21 July 1974, as Commander of the 31st Strike Company, he led the Company during the silent infiltration of the back line of enemy positions and occupied his Company’s objective. On 22 July 1974 during the Squadron’s operations in Agios Georgios, Kerynia, he fought valiantly, after having succeeded in neutralising a significant number of enemy tanks. He is missing since July 1974. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General with the Presidential Decree of 12 December 2008.
