Lord Byron Biography

The English poet Lord Byron was one of the most passionate Philhellenes who associated their name with the Greek Revolution. He was born in London on 22 January 1788, received a broad education from an early age, travelled extensively, and visited Greece in 1809, inspired by the Greek landscape and antiquity, a fact that is reflected in his major poems. From the beginning of the Revolution he actively aided the Struggle, joined the Philhellenic Committee, contributed financially, and undertook an important role in organising and supporting the Greek fighters. He arrived in Messolonghi on 5 January 1824, dying there on 19 April 1824, aged 36, bequeathing a legacy of self-sacrifice. His memory has been honoured as a symbol of Philhellenism and patriotism through monuments and place names which keep his contribution to Greece alive.
