Commander-in-Chief Georgios Karaiskakis arrived at Phaleron to lead operations against the Ottoman forces under Reşid Mehmed Pasha Kütahı, who was besieging the Acropolis, whose garrison was in a difficult position due to constant bombardments and disease. With approximately 1,000 experienced men, he advanced to Keratsini, successfully repelling enemy attacks and receiving help from forces of Peloponnesians under Kolokotronis and other chieftains.
Karaiskakis had a fever, but military operations did not allow him to rest. Together with the reinforcements, he implemented a plan to wear down the enemy by keeping them occupied with small engagements. However, he died of wounds a few days before the main battle after receiving a gunshot in the groin during the first clashes between Greek and Ottoman troops.
His death dealt a serious blow to the morale of the Greek rebels, resulting in the catastrophic Battle of Analatos in Phaleron, where Greek forces advanced in the open field, only to receive devastating fire and be encircled and annihilated, just as Georgios Karaiskakis had predicted.
