Military Registrars - Interpreters Corps
The Army has had operating secretariats since 1834. The military correspondence system was established in 1911. In 1914, the “Archivists Service” was formed, which developed into the Military Registrars – Interpreters Corps by means of Law 2937/1954, the officers of which serve in Staff and Major Formation Secretariats of the Army and the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
The General Specialty of Interpreters was established in 1954 and, since 1956, its officers serve in translation offices of the Army and the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, as well as in Military Education Institutions. For a short period of time Interpreter Officers became a Joint Armed Forces Corps, until they ultimately rejoined the Army by means of Law 2439 / 1996, article 26 § 19 – 6.
The emblem of the Military Registrars - Interpreters Corps
The emblem consists of two golden, crossed quills, which symbolise the power of the written word on paper and two overlapping circles, with one being blue and one being red, represent the connection which Interpreters maintain among the Hellenic and foreign Armies.
The motto “OI TE ΓPAMMATIΣTAI KAI OI EPMHNHΣ” (Registrars and Interpreters) derives from Plato’s Thaetetus, in which Socrates praises their work.
Our Mission
The mission of Military Registrars is the processing of military correspondence, the proper function of Secretariats and the keeping of military records, while that of Interpreters is to translate documents and interpret from/into foreign languages among representatives of authorities of the Hellenic and foreign Armies, as well as other Hellenic National Defence and Ministry of National Defence institutions.
Characteristics
Military Registrars ensure the smooth function and interoperability among formations, the precise and quick sharing of information, as well as the proper keeping of crucial military records, through the efficient processing of military correspondence and organised military record keeping. Through their translations, Military Interpreters ensure the successful accomplishment of cooperation activities, and the projection of the three Services of the Armed Forces to institutions abroad, while through interpretations they aid the fostering of relations among the Hellenic and Foreign Armed Forces.
