On Friday 04 October 2024, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General Dimitrios Choupis and the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, a commemoration event was held on the occasion of the completion of 120 years since the commencement of the Macedonian Struggle and the heroic sacrifice of Second Lieutenant (Artillery) Pavlos Melas at his residence in Kifissia.
The ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Kifissia Mr. Vasilis Xypolitas, the Deputy Governor of Athens Northern Sector Ms. Loukia Kefalogianni – representing the Governor of Attika, the Honorary Chief HAGS General (ret.) Charalampos Lalousis, the Honorary Chief HNGS Stylianos Petrakis, the Honorary Chief of the National Guard General Staff General (ret.) Georgios Basiakoulis, members of the Supreme Military Council, the Rear Admiral Sotirios Tsamilis, representing the Chief HNGS Vice Admiral Dimitrios – Eleftherios Kataras, the Major General Vasileios Tosios, representing the Chief HAFGS Lieutenant General Dimosthenis Grigoriadis, the Major General Christos Manouras, representing the Chief of the Hellenic Police Lieutenant General Dimitrios Mallios, the Rear Admiral of the Port Authority Dimitrios Kostarakis, as representative of the Chief of the Hellenic Port Authority – Coastguard Vice Admiral Georgios Alexandrakis, the Brigadier General Georgios Alekakos, representing the Chief of the Fire Department Lieutenant General Theodoros Vagias, the Mayor of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni Mr. Grigorios Konstantellos, the granddaughter of Pavlos Melas Ms. Natalia Ioannidi, the Chairman of the “Maria Tsakos” Public Benefit Foundation – International Centre for Maritime Research and Tradition, Captain Panagiotis Tsakos, representatives from the Local Administration, officers on active duty and retired officers, and other guests.
