SMCEM/NRDC-GR
The Supreme Military Command of Epirus and Macedonia/NRDC-GR is a Major Formation of the Army, an organ of the 1st ARMY/EU-OHQ. Its area of responsibility extends from the overseas islands (North of the island of Corfu) which is the westernmost tip of Greece to part of Eastern Macedonia, including the territorial divisions of Epirus and Macedonia.
The emblem of the SMCEM/NRDC-GR
The emblem of Supreme Military Command of Epirus and Macedonia/ NRDC-GR depicts the cross, symbol of faith, patience and martyrdom, guarded by a shield, which also bears a cross, symbol of the domination of the Byzantine Emperors.
The letter “Β” written four times at the corners of the cross mean: Βασιλεύς (King), Βασιλέων (of Kings), Βασιλεύων (Ruling over), Βασιλευόντων (the Rulers).
The phrase “… Ου φεισόμεθα της ζωής ημών” (we will give our lives willingly) is part of the answer of the last emperor of Byzantium Konstantinos Palaiologos to Mohammed B’, when the latter demanded the unconditional surrender of Constantinople in May 1453.
Our Mission
To proceed to all the necessary actions for the organisation, training and preparation of its forces, aiming to secure the territorial integrity and the national sovereignty, against the whole spectrum of threats in its Area of Responsibility and the fulfilment of goals of the country’s policy, as they are defined by the National Defence Policy.
Characteristics
The geopolitical value of the area, with its strategic transport infrastructure with road axes, airports and ports, highlights the critical role of the Supreme Military Command. In addition, Thessaloniki further enhances the geostrategic value of the region by connecting the Balkan countries with the Adriatic Sea, the Southeast Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

Transfer of C’ Army Corps to Thessaloniki
The C’ Army Corps, since its Establishment, took part in all the Nation’s struggles, at the Macedonian Front during WWI, the Asia Minor Campaign, the Greek-Italian War of 1940-41 and the operations of the 1946-49 period.

The national role of C’ Army Corps was terminated and it was attributed as C’ Army Corps/NDC-GR in NATO.
On the same date, the National HQ was decommissioned and the core of the National Staff was formed.

The National Staff was reorganised without an assigned national mission

“Operational HQ of the Land Forces at the Level of Army Corps”
The National Staff through a pertinent report of the Chiefs of General Staffs Council was reorganised into an “Operational HQ of Land Forces at the Level of Army Corps” titled “C’ Army Corps” and it was assigned an area of responsibility, with the capability for transition into Tactical HQ at the Division Level, in case of mission execution of the C’ Army Corps/NDC-GR abroad.

The HQ was offered by Greece to NATO as a high readiness HQ.

“Battle-ready”
After a Battle Readiness Evaluation by the Alliance and after demonstrating exquisite results throughout the evaluation subjects, it transformed into C’ Army Corps/NRDC-GR and was declared as “Battle-ready”
