Celebration Ceremony of the Patron Saint of the Army, Great Martyr Saint George at the Athens Concert Hall

On Tuesday 09 May 2024, in the presence of the Minister of National Defence Mr Nikos Dendias, as representative of the Government, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General Dimitrios Choupis and the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, an event took place at the Athens Concert Hall, on the occasion of the celebration of the Great Martyr Saint George, patron Saint of the Army.

The event was honoured by the presence of:

• The MP Mr Nikolaos Vlachakos, as representative of the Speaker of the Parliament.

• The Archimandrite – Brigadier General Mr Meletios Kouraklis, as representative of His Beatitude the Archbishop of Athens and All of Greece Mr Ieronymos Β’.

• The President of the Hellenic Court of Audit Ms Sotiria Ntouni.

• The Public Prosecutor of the High Court (Arios Pagos) Ms Georgia Adilini.

• His Eminence the Metropolitan Bishop of Mesogea and Lavreotiki Mr Nikolaos.

• The President of the Athens Academy Mr Stamatios Krimizis.

• The Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff Lieutenant General (Pilot) Dimosthenis Grigoriadis.

• The Chief of the Hellenic Fire Service Lieutenant General Theodoros Vagias.

• The Dean of the University of Piraeus Mr Michail Sfakianakis.

• Members of the Supreme Military Council.

• The Chief of Staff of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff Lieutenant General (Pilot) Konstantinos Zolotas.

• Deputy Chief Β’ of the Hellenic Port Authority – Coastguard Vice Admiral Tryfonas Kontizas, as representative of the Chief of the Hellenic Port Authority – Coastguard.

• The Deputy Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff Rear Admiral Georgios Floros HN, as representative of the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff.

• The Deputy Head of Region for Spatial Planning, Urban Issues & Applications of the Attica Region Mr Eleftherios Kosmopoulos.

• The President of the Municipal Council of Athens Mr Emmanouil Velegrakis.

• The Mayor of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni Mr Grigorios Konstantellos.

• The Mayor of Papagou – Cholargos Mr Ilias Apostolopoulos.

• Active and Retired Officers of the Armed and Security Forces, Journalists Accredited to the Ministry of National Defence and other guests.

Audio-visual charts of features about Saint George, Patron Saint of the Army as well as celebratory messages by the personnel of Surveillance Outposts were included in the event. The lyrics of the poem “Thermopylae” of the great Greek poet Konstantinos Kavafis were recited by the actress Theofania Papathoma, who also presented the event, and then a brief theatrical play was presented, re-enacting characteristic events regarding the Hellenic Army, throughout the History of the Hellenic Nation.

Afterwards, a musical feature was conducted by the singers Ms Evdokia Moisidou and Mr Theodoros Voutsikakis, who were accompanied by the military band of the Higher Military Command of Army Support and the newly established choir of the Nursing Officers Academy.

The event was concluded with the award of commemorative gifts to all its contributors, conducted by the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff.

The Hellenic Army General Staff thanks the President Mr Nikos Piblis, the members of the Board of Directors, as well as the personnel of the Athens Concert Hall for the exquisite cooperation and their contribution in any way, to the achievement of an artistically excellent result.
